May 2018

Dear reader

Greetings from Uttarkashi.
It's a beautiful spring here, each day capped off with an afternoon thunderstorm and heavy shower, often leaving a sprinkling of snow on the peaks around us. Perfect growing weather for the surrounding jungle, our ashram vegetable and flower gardens.
There's so much positive news and knowledge that I could easily send a more frequent newsletter. However, our Purusha program gets priority and I'll continue to send as regularly as possible.
Calendar 2018

'All international conflicts are caused by the collective tensions which individuals have released in the atmosphere. And the individual does not realize that by thought, speech and action he constantly emits an influence…'
'History records attempts of statesmen to establish lasting world peace, but because all attempts are made on the surface of international life and not on the level of life of the individual the problem of world peace continues to be a problem for every generation…'
'A solid foundation of permanent peace and happiness in the world can be laid down in the present generation. Success depends upon the undertaking by those who have the ability and resources to do something of practical value.'
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, The Science of Being and Art of Living’, Chapter 12, The Problem of World Peace. First published in1963. Newly revised, updated, and republished in 2017

What will the future look like?

What do you think the future portends? A Purusha friend and I have put down some thoughts, initially copied from the techno sites and blogs on how a fast paced changing world will unfold, and then we drew on occasional comments from Maharishi and some deep thinkers we know. Feel free to send me your own thoughts and comments.
Remember, the world is as we are. Our thoughts reflect our reality (and our future).
Here we go:

A brief time online browsing will come up with how many of the world dynamics have radically changed in just a few years. Below are some items gathered on some of these changing dynamics, plus tech pundit predictions of more to come. And then our own thoughts on the matter.

* Progress is faster than you think. In 1998, Kodak sold 85% of all film and photo paper worldwide with 170,000 employees. Three years later, film cameras - and Kodak - were almost obsolete. Such changes are happening even faster with Artificial Intelligence, Health, Education, Energy, 3D printing, Agriculture, and Autonomous Electric cars. What happened to Kodak will happen to many industries in the next 5-10 years, and most people don't see it coming.
* Software innovations are disrupting many traditional industries. For example, Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, yet they are the biggest taxi company in the world. Similarly, Airbnb is the biggest hotel company in the world, but they don't own any properties. They’re just a software company.
* In 1983, a two-pound cell phone the size of a brick with a long whip antenna cost about $9,000 (in today’s dollars). Now over half of the world’s population owns a mobile phone with built in digital camera and mini computer.
* Smartphones now contain as much computing power as the room-full of massive computers that was used to put a man on the moon. In a few years that same computing capability will fit into the size of a grain of rice, and connect you with everything. There’s no danger of loosing it, because it can be transplanted under your skin and accessed with voice commands, ear buds and digital watch screens.
